Performance by Alexandra Moralesová and Georgy Bagdasarov: Submemorias de un rollo

Performance for three 16 mm projectors and live sound design

*Submemorias de un rollo* explores the layered memories of territories marked by several centuries of silver mining. This ore contributed to Europe’s wealth and influence, whilst leaving behind depleted soil and profoundly transformed landscapes.

This material history resonates with that of photographic film. In the images on display, the silver too has almost disappeared: the film has been bleached to reveal its colours. Whether it be the film or the exploited territories, the performance questions what remains after the extraction of wealth.

Drawing on their own Super 8 films, shot several years earlier in Buenos Aires, Montevideo, La Paz and other cities, the artists develop a form of alchemical archaeology. The performance draws connections between the images and the material resources on which they depend, the figures and their backdrops, memory and vision, as well as Western narratives and other possible ways of inhabiting the world.

Biographies

Alexandra Moralesová is a Czech-Argentine filmmaker, experimental film curator and researcher. Her practice is rooted in the expanded ecology of the photochemical laboratory and takes the form of films, performances and performative lectures. She is interested in photochemical practices stemming from minority filmic and non-filmic practices, as well as in theories of materialist cinema, to which she also devotes her research and writing.

Georgy Bagdasarov is an artist born in Kazakhstan to an Armenian family and now based in Prague. His work explores the relationships between analogue and digital technologies, which he combines within hybrid devices. His works are notably influenced by structural cinema, cookery recipes and the syntax of computer languages.

Since 2013, Alexandra Moralesová and Georgy Bagdasarov have formed the duo Labodoble, which functions as both an artistic collective and a curatorial and educational platform. Their practice focuses on sustainable photochemical processes and the contradictions inherent in the concept of ecology. Through films, performances, installations and workshops, the duo transforms the relationship between machine and operator: the camera is no longer merely a technical tool, but becomes a true partner in the performance. Their work combines practical expertise, media theory and philosophical reflection.
