May 29th - 8.3pm - ST Merry church Paris

Melissa Dullius and Gustavo Jahn form Distruktur since 2006, when they moved together from South Brazil to Berlin. They started making films together in 1999, first on Super 8 and later on 16mm, their medium until the present day. After joining the collective LaborBerlin in 2007 they started applying handmade techniques on the making of their films. Beyond conceiving and producing moving images, they appear as actors and musicians and act as lab technicians, doing great part of the post-production work of their films.

Distruktur's body of work takes form as films, installations, film performances, photographs, text and graphic. It crosses the borders between art and film, experimental and narrative, photography and moving image. Films by Distruktur have been presented in festivals such as Berlinale, Torino, Moscow IFF and Videobrasil, as well as in New Museum in New York, Paço das Artes in São Paulo, Vilnius Contemporary Art Centre, and Berlinische Galerie.

During this rare evening at the Saint-Merry church in Paris, Distruktur will carry out 3 performances composed by 16mm projections, expanded cinema, sound interventions and rock concert.

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬PROGRAMME▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

ÉTERNAU ALTERSTEREO

2011 / 2 x 16mm / Color / Digital Sound / 25min

Éternau Alterstereo is a performance by DISTRUKTUR in the finest tradition of expanded cinema: a dual 16-mm projection accompanied by a collage soundtrack. Visual stereo hi-fi. The juxtaposition of the 2 screens affects the viewer experience and the images in different ways such as echoing, mirroring, or complementing each other. The use of distortion lenses during the projection can be applied to expand the projection space beyond the screen. The soundtrack comments and adds new layers to the images involving the audience in a warm tempest of sound. The film performance revisits and multiplies the short film Éternau, a colorful tropical fantasy that pays tribute -not without irony- to genres and clichés of the XX century cinema, eccentric film stars, exoticism and orientalism, by reproducing and reinventing this imagery from a timely and spatial distance.

All the 16mm footage used in the performance was shot in studio and locations in south Brazil between 2004 and 2006.

FILME DE PEDRA

Work-in-progress since 2012 / 16mm / B&W / Live Sounds / Variable duration

The film performance deals with the mythical dimension of stones, reproducing and amplifying the visible and audible frequencies they transmit to human beings. FILME DE PEDRA departs from portraits of stones from different places and collected throughout the years, to build up a narrative located in a remote era. The timelessness and impenetrability of the stones act as counterpoint to the human part of the film. Shot in a silent movie manner, it shows nomads crossing fields and cities in a journey through different layers of civilization. Music, words and sounds are performed live during the projection.

NAVEGAÇÃO

Work in progress since 2013 / 2 x 16mm / Color / Live music / Variable duration

Navegação (Navigation) is a rock concert accompanied by a flow of images. The screen is black at many times, and images appear as intervals: in the intervals there is what has been lost. All footage was shot on 16mm and hand processed and printed by Distruktur at LaborBerin e.V. Tests, home and voyage movies, animations and fragments are glued one after another reflecting different aspects of an experimental research on analogue film techniques. A ship that navigates over a sea of shapes, colors and textures- a moving body.
