COLLECTIF JEUNE CINEMA • BALi Kinos at Kasseler Dokfest (Germany)

    le 17/11/2018 à 13h30

Collectif Jeune Cinéma's history is complex and, in an attempt to simplify it, we could splice it in two periods : the first one goes from 1971 to 1983, the second one from 1998 to nowadays. This particular history can be noticed by having a look at our catalogue. This peculiarity is what we wish to express through this program, by showing recent films from our « new catalogue », as well as older films from the 70's, related to CJC's first era.

However, all the films in our program, except for Maurice Lemaître's film, are new additions to our catalogue. We try, since the comeback of CJC in 1998, to conciliate both the old and the new: our archive is not definitive nor fixed, and it grows each year. The research for new films from the past is led in relation to the Festival d'Hyères (1971-1983) program, which its experimental film section was closely related to CJC, and was led by Marcel Mazé, the main instigator of our cooperative. In a way, CJC is interested in defending less known films from the 70's and 80's, and proposes a new history of experimental cinema, implementing it with the diffusion of works by not yet renowned filmmakers from the past.

Our most recent project is in close relation with our catalogue: we aim to improve both its visibility and its availability by sharing most of our data, video, and documents, via the Mnémé System, created by the curator and archivist Sebestyén Kodolányi, former chief curator of the Béla Balázs Studio Archive. This will lead, in the future, to a European network of small and medium-sized cinematheques, archives, and cooperatives, in which CJC will be much involved.

We also have to mention our yearly Paris Festival for Different and Experimental Cinema, of which we just celebrated its 20th edition. In this program, four of the most recent films have been discovered and selected through our international competition which has become, since a few years, the main way we acquire films to implement our catalogue. This festival, created as a sequel of Festival d'Hyères, focuses both on contemporary cinema and retrospectives, and we always try to select films that could not easily fit either in fiction, documentary, or even experimental film festivals. We try, not by posture, but with a political conscience, to defend the « margins of the margins ».

In conclusion, we'd like to dedicate this program to Maurice Lemaître and Robert Todd, two beloved filmmakers of CJC, who recently passed away.
