Jérôme Javelle

Né en 1970, Jérôme Javelle s'oriente vers la réalisation cinématographique après avoir étudié la musique, le théâtre et la photographie. Etudiant en cinéma à la faculté de Paris VIII, il réalise ses premiers courts métrages en Super 8 dont Jeu de Cartes 1992, La Lettre et l'Accordéoniste 1993, 3ème Zone et une première version de Déroute en 1994. La même année, il rencontre Sophie Tatischeff et participe à la restauration de Jour de Fête couleur, au montage, au mixage et assiste aux travaux de laboratoire.

En 1995, Sophie Tatischeff produit le premier court métrage de Jérôme Javelle en 35mm, Déroute, qui est sélectionné dans différents festivals de films en France et à l'étranger. Elle lui confie aussi la gestion des archives de Jacques Tati dont il s’occupera jusqu’en 2002.

En 1997, il est photographe de plateau et tourne un making of sur le tournage Le Comptoir , un long métrage de Sophie Tatischeff. L’année suivante, il s’associe avec la réalisatrice au sein de Specta Films-CEPEC.

En 2000, ils rachètent ensemble une partie des droits des films de Jacques Tati avec Jérôme Deschamps et Macha Makeieff et ils restaurent Play Time en 70mm pour sa présentation au festival de Cannes en 2002 et sa ressortie en salle.

Parallèlement, Jérôme Javelle participe à diverses réalisations audiovisuelles et tourne quelques courts métrages dont LGZ 75 et Quelque chose suit son cours , deux films en 16mm noir et blanc qu’il développe dans son laboratoire photo adapté pour le traitement de la pellicule cinématographique.

Cette expérience réalisée hors des laboratoires traditionnels le mène à sonoriser ses films tournés muets. Il enregistre les bruitages et les post-synchros, monte les images et les sons et mixe ces films dans son home studio. Dans ce laboratoire , il travaille la forme cinématographique à travers des films expérimentaux tournés en Super 8 tel qu’ Exposed .

En 2003, Jérome Javelle réalise avec Sandrine Romet Lemonne le clip Billy pour le chanteur-compositeur Jérôme Lapierre. Tous trois montent un spectacle pour le festival de musique Les Nuits Secrètes à Aulnoyes en août 2004 où musique et projections Super 8 se mèlent pour raconter l’histoire d’un cowboy moderne, Billy.

De 2004 à 2006, Jérôme Javelle monte plusieurs documentaires pour la télévision dont J'avais oublié, Les Justes produits par Injam Production et Les Grands Entretiens de Bernard Pivot : Michel Tournier produit par INA/Gallimard, films réalisés par Nicolas Ribowski.

Mai-juin 2007, Jérôme Javelle rejoint La Compagnie La Chose sur L'Ame Son, un spectacle vivant créé et interprété par Laetitia Boyer-Rancelli, trapéziste et Gilles Wolf, saxophoniste. Il mixe les sons émis par le trapèze et les ressorts présents sur scène lors de représentations aux Friches Urbaines à Paris puis au Festival Les Années Joué à Joué-les-Tours.

Depuis plusieurs années, Jérôme Javelle réalise “ Incomplétude ”, un travail photographique sur le regard de
l’autre à travers ses voyages en Asie. Il utilise le moyen format pour accompagner sa recherche.

C’est lors d’un de ses voyages en 2007 qu’il est amené à réaliser son dernier film, “ Urgence Chronique,
Santé et Droits de l’Homme en Birmanie orientale ” un documentaire tourné en Birmanie par une ONG qui
porte de l’aide humanitaire et secourt des populations ethniques prise dans des conflits menés par la junte
militaire birmane. Ce film est diffusé par les Jeudis du Festival International des Films des Droits de
l’Homme à Paris en 2010.

Born in 1970, Jerome Javelle turns towards filmmaking after studying music, theater and photography.
Student in Film at the Paris VIII University, he directs his first short films on Super 8, including « Jeu de
Cartes » 1992, « The Letter » and « The Accordionist » 1993, « 3rd Zone » and a first version of
« Deroute » in 1994. The same year he meets Sophie Tatischeff, Jacques Tati’s daughter, and participates in
the restoration of « Jour de Fête » color, he assists at editing, re-recording and laboratory processing.

In 1995, Sophie Tatischeff produces the Jerome Javelle’s first short film in 35mm, « Deroute » which is
selected in several film festivals in France and abroad. She also confides him the management of Jacques
Tati’s archives which he takes care until 2002.

In 1997, he is photographer and shoots a making of about « Le Comptoir », a feature film by Sophie
Tatischeff. The following year, they team within Specta Films-CEPEC, the last Tati’s film production
compagny .

In 2000, they buy together a parts of Jacques Tati’s rights with Jerome Deschamps and Macha Makeieff, then
they restore « Play Time » in 70mm to be shown at the Cannes Film Festival in 2002 before getting on
screen again in France and abroad.

Meanwhile, Jerome Javelle participates in several audiovisual productions and shoots several short films
including « LGZ 75 » and « Something follows its way », two black & white films shot in 16mm. Then he
processes the 16mm rolls in his photolab adapted for processing cinema film.

This experiment outside professional labs leads him to record sounds for his films shot mute. He records
sound effects and post-syncs, edited sounds and pictures, then he re-records final soundtracks in his home
studio. In this "lab", he works cinema expression way through experimental films shot in Super 8 such as
« Exposed ».

In 2003, Jerome Javelle and Sandrine Romet-Lemonne direct together « Billy », a music clip for the singer-
songwriter Jerome Lapierre. All three together they imagine a show for the Music Festival « Les Nuits
Secretes » at Aulnoye in August 2004. In this show, songs, music and Super 8 pictures mingle for telling the
story of a modern cowboy, Billy.

From 2004 to 2010, Jerome Javelle edits several TV documentary films such as « J’avais oublié », « Les
Justes » two films directed by Nicolas Ribowski and « The Price of the Gold » directed by Dominique
Maestrati all three produced by Injam Production, « Les Grands Entretiens of Bernard Pivot : Michel
Tournier » produced by INA / Gallimard, and a few else...

From 2005 to 2009, Jerome Javelle conducts workshops about film making and editing for students within
Cinema and Audiovisual Section of the high school Léo Ferré in Gourdon (south west of France).
These workshops are organized around the shooting of a fiction or documentary film in which he teaches to
students how making a movie (script, directing, production, camera, sound , light, set and costumes, editing,
post-production, mastering and broadcasting ...). These school films are screened in festivals and in cinemas
of the Midi-Pyrenees area.

May-June 2007, Jerome Javelle joins La Chose Company on « l’Ame Son » (« Soul Sound »), a live
performance created and performed by Laetitia Boyer-Rancelli, trapeze and Gilles Wolf, saxophonist. During
performances, he mixes the sounds emitted on stage by the trapeze and springs at the Friches Urbaines in
Paris and for the Festival « Les Années Joué » at Joué-les-Tours.

For several years, Jerome Javelle focus on « Incompleteness », a photowork on the gaze of the other through
his travels in Asia. He uses the medium-format to support his work.

During one of his trips he directs « Chronic Emergency, Health and Human Rights in Eastern Burma » a
documentary shot in Burma by people we call « Backpackers », NGO medics settled at Thai-Burma border
who bring humanitarian aid to ethnic populations caught in a warrior conflict led by the military junta. This
film was shown at the International Festival Films on Human Rights, Paris 2010.
