Le film est inspiré par l''histoire de Chelsea Manning (connu sous le nom de Bradley Manning), non pas en tant qu'"hacktivist" chez Wikileaks, mais en tant que jeune soldat américain souffrant parallèlement d'une crise identitaire et d’une crise de conscience.
Animé en rotoscopie dans un style pixel-art, et basant ses dialogues sur les conversations en ligne de Manning, le film s'intéresse à la dissimulation, tant politique que personnelle, à l'identité numérique et à l'aliénation.
