Barbara Klutinis

(1943-2020)

I have been making experimental films and documentaries since 1981 in San Francisco, California. I taught part time film study classes at Skyline College and San Francisco State University for 16 years. I also taught animation to grade school children while my children were in elementary school. Since then I have retired from teaching, but I continue to make films and photos in my older years.

My early work is a blend of optical printing, hand coloring, and hand processing. I liked to think of myself as a “textural colorist,” if there is such a word, meaning that I enjoy creating surreal environments using manipulated color and sound that match the texture of the image rather than the content of the images.

My later work, since the advent of the digital age, has moved towards more traditional documentary forms on topics that have affected my life on a number of different levels.

I continue to live in San Francisco, surrounded by my adult children and grandchildren and am now in a struggle with advanced breast cancer, which occupies most of my time. I am, however, excited to archive my work so that it may live somewhere after my demise.
